JPEC 2022 Report to the Community

January 5th, 2022

The 63 Utah judges who are currently eligible to stand for retention during the general election in November 2022 may be the first to experience a change in evaluation reporting due to upcoming legislation, H.B. 40. This bill aims to revise the Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission’s (JPEC) decision point from a recommendation of retention to a determination of whether the judge passes performance standards. The change follows recommendations from research conducted and similar reporting changes made by judicial performance evaluation groups in other states. The attached JPEC 2022 Report to the Community provides a legislative overview and highlights JPEC’s innovative courtroom observation program.
